About our Department:
The Planning Department provides for the orderly growth, development, and redevelopment of the City of Huntsville. A Geographic Information System (GIS) is essentially a combination of maps and databases that analyzes and displays geographically referenced information. This powerful computer-based tool can be used to capture, create, store, interpret, analyze, and visualize spatial data, attached to a unique location. Uses range from simple (viewing parcel data) to complex (criteria-based site selection for a proposed development). GIS is widely used and relies on data and information from many sources.
GIS Technical Assistant Position Overview:
This is an entry level technical position with emphasis performing GIS data gathering, collection, digitizing, conversion, editing and analysis. Applies cartographic standards to prepare maps and exhibits using GIS datasets. Apply and maintain GIS production standards in the creation and modification of GIS data. Enter as-built, survey data, field notes, plats, legal descriptions, address information, etc. in continuous effort to keep GIS databases current. Assist customers and employees with basic GIS information inquiries and maps.
The GIS Technical Assistant is a temporary, part-time position. The eight-week program is expected to start on Monday, June 02, 2025, and conclude on July 25, 2025. Details concerning orientation will be sent to the chosen applicant at a later date.
Necessary Qualifications and Special Requirements:
High school diploma from a school accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or GED certificate issued by the appropriate state agency.
A valid driver's license.

The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:
Valid driver's license.
Work experience supervising or working in a lead capacity in a GIS, IT, or Engineering environment to include training and reviewing work of coworkers or staff.
Work experience creating and editing (e.g., creating/editing fields, setting dropdown options, programing with SQL or Oracle) in GIS databases (Esri, ArcGIS, MapInfo).
Work experience developing parameters for the evaluation of assets (e.g., sewer line inspections, pump stations, treatment facilities) and the probabilities of outcomes (e.g., likelihood of failures, consequences of failures) related to asset management.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by Merit System agencies. These qualifications may be considered by a hiring agency when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection processes.
Asset Management Certification (e.g., Institute of Asset Management, CTAM).
Project Management Professional Certification.

Systems Analyst - Geographical Information Systems (GIS) develop conceptual and detailed specifications for a Geographic Information System (GIS) system to include full integration of GIS software, analyzing and providing solutions to information processing (e.g., processing relational data to map onto a Geo-spatial model). Additionally, Systems Analysts monitor, evaluate, and assess GIS performance and providing a broad support for GIS server and software solutions including user training and system updating and auditing. Systems Analysts design, develop, and modify system applications, databases, and/or programs by meeting with users to identify needs and uses various programming languages (e.g., ASP.Net, Java, C# SQL, Python, etc.). The Analyst has a supervisory role within the department.
