This talk presented by Ankur Shah, Executive Director of PlanetSapling and Co-founder of Huntsville Environmental Coalition, will explore how geospatial data can be used to understand extreme heat risk across Huntsville at the neighborhood and block level. Using satellite-derived land surface temperature, high-resolution tree canopy and impervious surface data, and infrastructure data, the presentation will show how heat exposure varies across the city and why some neighborhoods experience greater risk than others. It will also highlight the development of Huntsville’s emerging heat resilience mapping platform and how these insights can help identify priority locations for interventions such as tree planting, shade infrastructure, cooler public spaces, and safer walking and transit routes. The talk will demonstrate how geospatial science can move beyond simply mapping heat to support practical decisions for a more heat-resilient Huntsville.
